We call our templates "Microsoft Word Templates," but they work just as well in all other major word processing programs, like Word Perfect, Open Office, and Pages for Mac, to name a few. The instructions listed here are specific to Microsoft Word, but there are similar menu options and commands in the other word processing programs.
There is no need to retype your manuscript, as long as you follow these simple steps. You can just copy and paste your book file into the template. If your book isn't written yet, that makes it even easier. Type right onto our template and then once you are finished, save your work. We'll always provide you with a PDF proof to review and approve before we print, so be sure to check the spacing, layout and design of your Manuscript to make sure it looks exactly how like it.
First impression is everything when it comes to the cover of your book. If you do not have a cover created for your masterpiece, we have a graphic's team who can create one for you at a fraction of standard industry prices.
Learn about the process of manually putting paper (also known as pages) together to form a book. Bookbinding includes binding this paper or pages with either a hard or soft cover exterior.
The design and layout of your book (also known as interior designing) should reflect the subject of the book and style of your writing. Learn more about preparing your book for printing.
If you plan to sell your book in stores or make it available in libraries, you'll need an LCCN (Library of Congress Catalog Number). Learn more about other Book Identifiers such as ISBN and EAN.
Our Book Templates can save you time and money by automating some of the set-up and formatting tasks. We have Templates for Inside Pages and for Covers.
Book Templates for Word -- Inside Pages:
These can be used in virtually any word processor (like Microsoft Word, Open Office, Pages, Word Perfect, etc.) Please note: It's not necessary to use these templates. If you've already written your book in a word processing program, it's probably easier to do some basic formatting in your existing file. But, if you're just getting started, we encourage you to download one of our templates, open it up and just start typing.
Below are suggested book sizes for certain types of books. It is your choice which size you actually prefer your book to be.
First, open your original book file in Word document. Select the entire text of your manuscript and COPY it. Close your original book file.
Open our template, SELECT ALL, and PASTE. You've just replaced all the text in our template with all of your text. The formatting won't be right, but we're going to fix that right now. Save this file and name it differently from your original so you will always have your original file available to fall back on.
Open the list of styles under "Styles and Formatting." (Note: In Word 2019, you would open the "Styles Window" from the "HOME" tab, next to "Clipboard," "Font," and "Paragraph.") Select the ENTIRE text and change the style to "NORMAL."
Now go back and change all the specialized formats starting from the beginning of your file. Select your title and click on "Title" in the styles. If you've got a particularly long title, you'll want to make some adjustments to the font size. You can also use a different font if you d like. You'll also want to change the subtitle, author's name, copyright page wording, Table of Contents, Headings for any front matter (Foreword, Preface, etc.) and each chapter heading in a similar fashion.

These Templates are designed to give you a better idea of your book size and how many pages it will be. If you are self-publishing, we suggest that you set your margins to 0.75 all around but no less than .5. It is not required that you use any of these templates. The fonts used in the Free Book Templates are for illustrative purposes only. Feel free to use any fonts you wish in your document.
You may adjust your margins to present your work however you wish as long as you adhere to these minimum requirements. For example, 1-inch margins all around are perfectly fine, but left or right margins of 1/8 inch or top or bottom margins of 1/4 inch would not work. If you are using these templates as a self-publisher, please be aware that we will not adjust your settings for you. The way you send your files is the way we will print them.
You may obtain formatting services from our À la Carte should you need further assistance. Those who are obtaining publishing packages will receive full formatting.
