A Good Book Starts in the Mind!

The "mind" is the term most commonly used to describe the higher functions of the human brain, particularly those of which humans are subjectively conscious, such as personality, thought, reason, memory, intelligence and emotion. The "brain" is the part of the central nervous system situated within the skull.  Its functions include muscle control and coordination, sensory reception and integration, speech production, memory storage, and the elaboration of thought and emotion.

So, what's the point?

Just finished your manuscript? Did someone proofread it for you? You can go over your story a hundred times and most likely you will still end up with errors.  Why?  Because the mind is the most powerful tool we have, and it is designed to correct what is wrong in an attempt to make it right.  When you read over your material and a typo or mistake is presence, your brain (in most cases) will correct it for you. The tricky part about this is that your brain does not alert your mind that there is a problem detected. In other words, your brain has already corrected the problem and wishes to move on. For this reason, it is important to have others look it over for you to catch the mistakes that your mind missed.

Here are 11 mistakes that a writer should avoid.

As an aspiring author, it's important to avoid common mistakes in order to maintain your credibility and increase your chances of success. Here are some tips to help you avoid common errors:

  • Don't have unrealistic expectations: It's rare for a book to earn out its advance, so don't count on making a fortune from your book, even if it's a success by publishing standards. The reality is that most books don't even earn back their advance. Instead of focusing on making money from the book itself, consider developing a personal marketing plan to leverage your career using your book as a tool. You can use your book to open doors, establish credibility, and build relationships with readers. This can be a more sustainable and rewarding approach than trying to make a lot of money from the book itself.

  • Always have a signed Agreement: Before you start putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard), it's important to make sure you have a signed Agreement in place. While it may be tempting to dive right into writing your book, taking the time to prepare a polished proposal and two sample chapters can significantly increase your chances of getting accepted. A well-written proposal and sample chapters can help you stand out from the competition and demonstrate your writing skills and expertise to potential publishers or agents. So don't skip this important step - take the time to create a strong proposal and sample chapters, and you'll be well on your way to getting your book published.

  • Consider getting a literary agent: If you're an author looking to get paid upfront for your manuscript, it may be in your best interest to seek representation from a literary agent. A literary agent can help you navigate the publishing industry and find the right publisher for your work. They can also negotiate on your behalf to get you the best terms and deal possible. In short, a literary agent can be a valuable ally in your journey as an author. So if you're looking to get paid upfront for your manuscript, consider seeking out a literary agent to help you achieve your goals.

  • Choose a strong title:  Your book's title is like the headline of an ad - it needs to grab attention and highlight the benefits of your book. A successful title often includes consonants and alliteration. Make sure your title is catchy and clearly communicates what readers can expect from your book.

  • Consider writing a series: Publishers are often on the lookout for ideas that have the potential to be developed into a series, rather than just standalone titles. This is because series have the potential to generate more revenue and have a longer shelf life than individual titles. If you're an author with an idea for a series, it might be worth pitching it to publishers as they may be more interested in your concept as a result. Keep in mind, however, that it's always important to have a strong, well-developed concept regardless of whether it's a standalone title or part of a series.

  • Build a support network: Having a supportive community of readers and peers is crucial for a successful career as an author. Surrounding yourself with people who will help keep your passion alive and provide valuable ideas, assistance, and feedback can make all the difference. So if you're looking to take your career to the next level, consider building a network of supportive individuals who can help you achieve your goals.

  •  Try Event Writing: Writing your book doesn't have to be a daunting task. Instead of trying to "go away" and write your entire book in one sitting, try "event" writing - setting aside a little bit of time each day to work on your book. This can help reduce stress, which is often an author's biggest enemy. By taking a more manageable approach, you can avoid the unrealistic burden of marathon writing and make steady progress towards your goal. So, try breaking up your writing into smaller chunks and see how it works for you. Happy writing!

  • Have you been putting off writing your book? If so, you're not alone. It can be easy to get sidetracked by other commitments and priorities, and before you know it, weeks or even months have gone by without making progress on your book. But don't worry - it's never too late to get back on track. One simple and effective way to get back into the writing habit is to commit to writing for just 45 minutes a day.
  •  - Spending just 45 minutes a day writing can seem manageable, even for busy schedules, and it can help reduce stress and keep your creative juices flowing. By consistently setting aside this time each day, you can keep your subconscious mind engaged with your project and make steady progress. Plus, by setting a daily goal for yourself, you'll be more likely to stay motivated and avoid getting overwhelmed. So if you've fallen behind on your writing goals, don't despair. Just set aside 45 minutes each day to write, and you'll be well on your way to completing your book.

  •  When it comes to self-editing, it's important to strike a balance. While it's important to make sure your book is free of spelling and grammar errors, it's also important to focus on getting your ideas down on paper first. Don't get bogged down in the details of self-editing before you've even finished your first draft. Remember, editors are there to help with things like grammar and structure, but they can't do anything until you submit your final manuscript. So, focus on getting your ideas down and completing that first draft, and leave the heavy editing for later. It will save you time and energy in the long run.

  • Are you failing to promote -  As an author, it's important to understand that publishers are not responsible for promoting your book. While they may have expertise in editing, manufacturing, and distributing books, they are not equipped to give your book the marketing attention it deserves. In fact, it's not uncommon for a single publicist to represent over 100 different books at a time. If you want your book to succeed, it's essential that you take an active role in promoting it in addition to writing it. Don't rely on your publisher to do all the work - be proactive and take control of your book's marketing efforts.

  • Failure to backup and save: As a writer, it's essential to make sure you're consistently saving your work and taking steps to protect it. This includes saving frequently while writing, saving before printing, and making sure to back up your files in a secure, off-site location. Before you shut down your computer, make sure to save a copy of your work in case something happens to your device. And before you end a writing session, be sure to print out a hard copy of the latest version of your chapter. This will give you a physical backup in case something goes wrong with your digital files.
  • - By following these simple steps, you can help ensure that your writing is always protected and that you don't lose any progress. Don't take the risk of losing your work - make sure to save and back up your writing regularly.

  • Failure to plan future profits -  As an author, it's important to think about the long-term profitability of your book, not just its initial sales. That's why it's crucial to create a book marketing plan before you even start writing.
  • - Your book marketing plan should identify a range of opportunities for building a lasting relationship with your readers, including consulting, newsletters, audio/video recordings, seminars, speeches, and yearly updates. By thinking about the future profits of your book, you can set yourself up for ongoing success and create a sustainable, long-term income stream.
  • - Don't just focus on book sales - consider the full range of opportunities that your book can provide and create a plan to capitalize on them. By doing so, you can turn your book into a valuable asset that continues to generate income for you over time.

In conclusion, it's important to remember that your book is a business, and as such, you should approach it with the same level of care and attention that you would any other business venture. A book has the power to truly change your life, but it's up to you to take charge and proactively promote and leverage its success. Whether it's through marketing efforts, partnerships, or leveraging its content in other ways, there are many ways to ensure that your book reaches its full potential and achieves the success it deserves. So, be proactive and take charge of your book's success!
